Cleveland Resident ambassadors

Find everything you need to help welcome newcomers to The Land. If you don't find it, drop us a note so we can help you).

WELCOME • CONNECT • ENGAGE

Who are Ambassadors?

You’re the connector — you're who make this whole program work. We need you to make that human connection.

You’re here to help make the transition smoother. Help newcomers and prospective residents plug into things they’ll love—whether that’s hiking trails, local meetups, or a volunteer group.

You’re also what makes Cleveland stand out from everywhere else. You’re showing people why this is the place to be.

Ultimately, you might be the reason someone might choose to stay or move here. Sure, the job or the move brings them here, but you help them feel like they actually belong.

What to expect after you're matched

It's easy as 1-2-3

1

Set up ONE 15-minute call or in-person meeting.

This is where you’ll get to know them. Learn what industry they work in, what do they like to do in their free time, is it just them or did they move/are they moving with family or friends.

This meeting can be either in-person, via zoom, or over the phone. If you decide to meet in-person, we advise that you meet in a public setting.

2

Share TWO in-person community events or information related to their interests.

Help encourage the newcomer to get involved in the community with your specific recommendations and insight.

3

Facilitate THREE connections.

These could be groups, clubs, or people you think would really get along with this person.

What an Ambassador
Does 👍

Supports each newcomer's Path to Yes

Offers a friendly welcome that helps newcomers feel like they're already part of the community

Serves as a "first friend" to those who move to your community

Answers specific questions about the community, or connects them to those who can

Reports wins and challenges to the Cleveland Talent Alliance team to help continuously improve the program

What an Ambassador does
NOT do 👎

Talk politics

Grumble about the weather

Ask "Why would you move HERE?!"

Sell your goods or services

Feel responsible to apply for anything on someone else's behalf

Gossip about employers — always be positive

Never do anything that makes you feel uncomfortable or unsafe

Ambassador FAQs

My newcomer hasn't replied. What should I do?
Follow up with a short, friendly email that says something along the lines of “Hey I’m just checking in to see if you’d still like to connect. No pressure – just know that I am here whenever you want to connect!”
My newcomer seems unsure and overwhelmed. How can I help them?

Depending on where newcomers are at in their journey, if they’ve just recently moved then they might feel a bit overwhelmed.

In this case, we advise that you recommend 1-2 low-stake activities like a farmers market, casual meet-up, or a laid back community event.

My newcomer isn't sure what they're looking for. What should I do?

Try asking open-ended questions like – “What do you usually like to do on weekends?” or “Is there something you’ve always wanted to try in a new place?

Or share a few diverse recommendations like a hiking group, networking event, and a favorite coffee shop you enjoy going to. This will help them start exploring.

I don't have the right connection for my newcomer. How can I help them?
Remember, sometimes you are not going to have all the answers! Reach out to Sara Greicius, Talent Alliance Director, at sgreicius@clevelandtalent.org or fellow Ambassadors for ideas or introductions.
I feel uncomfortable or unsafe. How should I proceed?

You’re not expected to meet with anyone you don’t feel comfortable with. Trust your instincts.

If you do find yourself in this situation, we advise that you immediately contact Sara Greicius, Talent Alliance Director, at sgreicius@clevelandtalent.org team for support and next steps.

How do I opt out of being a Resident Ambassador?

If being an Ambassador is no longer a good fit for you, simply send an email to Sara at sgreicius@clevelandtalent.org to let her know.

We'll ensure any newcomers you're currently working with continue to receive the support they need during the transition.
